Hugh Laurie has one of the most amazing British-to-American crossover accents on television. Scan the web for info on him and you’ll find a wide variety of opinions on this, however. Not everyone is impressed. You might be able to detect flashes of a British influence when he portrays Dr. House on the long-running series bearing his character’s name, but when he is in character he sounds so very, very American. When he is not, as in the interview clip with Ellen DeGeneres below, he is so very, very British. In the Ellen clip it’s hard not to notice his repeated misfiring of the American /ch/ sound, which happens to make his pronunciation a little difficult for Ellen to understand.
In the clip from the series you’ll also hear Jesse Spencer’s natural Melbourne tongue. Another example of accent mash-ups in which one star is asked to alter and another isn’t.
